Our hotel in Sydney is working out well. (Hotel 59) We're paying $100/night which includes a generous breakfast. We're in Kings Cross, evidently the backpackers paradise and red light district, full of hostels, sports bars and take out joints. We feel like we've been dropped into a college town. But our place is on a side street and quiet - and it's only a 20 minute walk to the harbor and tourist area.
Incidentally, our luggage strategy didn't work. A 21" carry on is still too large for Qantas so we had to check our bags. They came though fine. With the wheels I didn't think too much about weight and packed heavy (Shanna's Complete Birds of Australia). I forgot about stairs - we're on the second story. Oh well - off to the next adventure.
